IN.5 Interview : Allan Jay, Singer and Performer
Scottish singer Allan Jay has enjoyed great success in recent years with his pop-tastic singles ‘I Go To Pieces’ and ‘Boom Boom Boom – Lets Go Back To My Room’ both going Top10 in the Eurodance Hits Chart. For his next single, ‘Breaking My Heart’, he’s teamed up ‘Everybody’s Free (To Feel Good)’ star Rozalla.
DESCRIBE YOURSELF IN FIVE WORDS
Well I think I know what my manager would say! But I’d describe myself as fun, outgoing, driven, passionate and inpatient.
WHAT WOULD YOU SPEND YOUR LAST £5 ON?
Now there’s a question, and I probably shouldn’t lie. So I’ll say a nice drink – alcoholic of course.
WHEN DID YOU LAST GET STARSTRUCK?
I’m very lucky that I’ve been on the same line-up as a lot of brilliant artists over the years. There is such immense talent in the industry that I admire!
I’ve met and worked with a few ‘celebs’, but the time I got a little silly starstruck was when I was performing in Holland at a sports awards. Not many people know this, but I’m a huge tennis fan. I sat down in make up after our rehearsal and sat beside me was Kim Clijsters. At the time I believe she’d beaten Serena Williams to win the US Open. She’s an amazing player and I always loved watching her. That was a real starstruck moment for me.
However, I think I’d be like a child if I was to ever meet Dannii Minogue. I wouldn’t be able to speak. I love her.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE VENUE FOR A FAB NIGHT OUT IN GLASGOW?
Now that depends on what sort of night out! I can honestly say that since moving back to Glasgow after living in London for a while I’ve had many laughs and good times at the award winning Waterloo bar. If you’re in town, check it out!
WAITER, PLEASE BRING ME…
Now are we talking a posh night out or just grabbing a drink with friends? But thinking about it, if I was saying ‘Waiter, please bring me anything’ then it would be either a nice glass of champagne (posh night) or a vodka, soda and lime.
WHAT ARE YOU MOST LOOKING FORWARD TO?
At the moment I have to say there’s lots of amazing things happening with my music. On top of this I also have a few shows and filming in the pipeline too. Put all of this together and I’m looking forward to exciting times traveling and promoting my music. It’s also my nieces third birthday soon, that’ll be a special day for us all.
DO YOU HAVE A HIDDEN TALENT?
In one word…no (laughs). I can sing, dance and act and that’s about it really!
WHAT’S YOUR PROUDEST MOMENT?
There have been some amazing moments throughout my career. Whether it’s appearing on TV shows, performing in stadiums, seeing my music enter various charts around Europe, performing at some amazing venues and being a part of an original musical….they’ve all been big moments in my life.
I am proud of each of these but I have to say the day I became an Uncle tops all of these. I couldn’t be prouder of my niece. I adore her.
Here’s a teaser for the official video for ‘Breaking My Heart’ – Allan’s upcoming single with Rozalla. The single is available to download from 19th August.
“I think I’d be like a child if I was to ever meet Dannii Minogue. I wouldn’t be able to speak. I love her.”
HAVE YOU EVER HAD YOUR HEART BROKEN?
Oh yes. Now, next question (laughs)!
YOU’RE STUCK IN GROUNDHOG DAY AND YOU’RE GOING TO HAVE TO LISTEN TO THE SAME SONG FOR ETERNITY. WHAT SONG WOULD YOU NEVER GET TIRED OF LISTENING TO?
Now that’s a very hard question to answer. There are so many songs that I love so much. Thinking long and hard, I’m going to say ‘I Surrender’ by Nicki French. It’s a proper dance-floor tune…and of course our Ms French’s vocals are amazing on the song.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE SONG FROM THE 90S?
It has to be Rozalla’s huge hit ‘Everybody’s Free’. My decision has nothing to do with the fact my next single is a duet with her. ‘Everybody’s Free’ is such a tune and is guaranteed to get people on their feet.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE MUSICAL?
I actually trained in musical theatre and have been very lucky to perform in various shows around the world. I was a part of a show called ‘Diamond’, which was an original musical set during the war. I loved being a part of something new.
There are also quite a few shows that I’ve auditioned, and sadly been unlucky in not landing the role for. The one I really wanted, but never got, was ‘We Will Rock You’. I love the song ‘Who Wants to Live Forever’. I was lucky enough to do a concert of ‘We Will Rock You’ for an awards ceremony where I sang with the amazing Katie Stewart and we got to sing the song, and I loved it.
X FACTOR, THE VOICE OR BRITAIN’S GOT TALENT? IF YOU WERE FORCED TO ENTER ONE SHOW, WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Oh, I really don’t know. If I had to choose one it would probably be X Factor. But only because I’d love to meet Nicole!
