I was recently invited to display my artwork at Inclusive Networks Rooftop Garden Party event at The Glasshouse in Edinburgh – yippie! Seeing as it was being held in a garden, I decided to expand on my previous ‘Gravity X Gunge’ series to create a site specific installation called ‘Eden’. This featured four large pieces of art depicting a modern day Adam and Eve, alongside detailed shots of their bodies.

As the event was all about inclusion and ‘being yourself’ my aim was to create four immersive pieces that conveyed the idea that we are all equal as human beings. Recently there has been a lot of negativity, hatred and violence towards people and groups of people who are just trying to be themselves and I think it is important to reaffirm the message that WE ARE ALL JUST HUMAN – we are simply brothers and sisters trying to survive on this tiny planet, so why all the hate?!

When we strip back social conventions, cultural practices, political stances and religious views we are simply left with flesh and bone. It’s really that simple. There is no excuse for the sort of behaviour we’ve been seeing recently and those who try and justify it really need to reassess where we are as a species. Not only is it shocking, it’s downright absurd!

“When we strip back social conventions, cultural practices, political stances and religious views we are simply left with flesh and bone. It’s really that simple.”

I hope those of us who are brave enough to be ourselves, continue to express our individuality and show the world the true meaning of the word ‘unique’ – we are not afraid and we aren’t going to run or hide! On the other hand, If you are guilty of not being authentic and you’re scared to even understand the real you, then I suggest that you immerse yourself in love, happiness and compassion. Let it wash over you, push to be a genuine human and wave your ‘freak flag’ high…this is your life and you deserve an amazing time while you’re here, so be yourself and BE FABULOUS at all times!

A-men!

About The Author

Mark Vice

Based in Edinburgh, Mark is a contemporary Scottish artist with an eye for all things kitsch, bold, sexy and, most importantly, sassy! He had a brief and extremely fun stint at Uni (earning a BA in Popular Music - yes, you read that right, POP music!), but it wasn't until after the course that he felt there was something missing in his day-to-day life. All of that changed when he picked up a paintbrush and rediscovered just how much he loved to create tangible artwork. Since then he has spent every waking moment researching, painting, photographing, blogging, networking, succeeding, failing, persevering and generally having an amazing - yet admittedly challenging - time working on his artwork.
