#ReverseAdvent : The Co-op thinks inside the box

As a former employee of The Co-op (I left to found Inclusive Networks) my personal social media feeds are always full of news and updates from my friends who still work there. My friend Robbie Kimpton shared a photo of a big blue Co-op branded cardboard box on Facebook and I was intrigued. What was it for?

650 boxes, including a £5 Co-op gift voucher, have been distributed to employees. Each day of Advent, the owner of the box pops an item in the box and on Christmas Eve, or when the box is full, they donate it to someone in need. That’s called #ReverseAdvent.

I really love this idea, and had to share. It’s great seeing the business ‘think inside the box’ and encourage employees, members and beyond to give back this Christmas and think of others.

I’ve spotted tweets from employees saying they are filling the box for people who are homeless and some collecting pet related items to be donated to cat and dog shelters.

“All you need is the willingness to give back this Christmas.”

Sadly all of the #ReverseAdvent packs have been allocated but you can still get involved. All you need is:

  • A cardboard box
  • Items to donate. What you include may depend on who you’re planning to give it to. Some ideas are non-perishable food items like tins and packets, treats with the shorter shelf life, toothpaste, toothbrushes and other toiletries, clothing items like socks and underwear, first aid kits
  • And the willingness to give back this Christmas

He also won the 2012 ‘Pride of The Co-operative’ award. He was a judge for Scotland's biggest diversity awards, The Icon Awards in 2016, 2017 and 2018.
