It always makes us happy seeing another employee network group getting launched. On 10th February the world’s largest services company ‘Sodexo’ launched the UK and Ireland chapter of its global LGBT employee network, Sodexo Pride. We were delighted to support the launch by sharing their updates and helping create a buzz across Twitter – our feed was alive that day with people using the #SodexoPride hashtag.

The launch event at their London HQ was attended by 100 Sodexo employees and supporters and had the full backing of the most senior people in the business. There was no escaping the launch at their HQ, with their restaurant hanging lots of Pride flags from the ceiling and strong branding and posters adorning walls and windows around the building.

The colourful event was hosted during LGBT History Month and was opened by Sodexo Group CEO Michel Landel. He discussed his global vision for LGBT inclusion at Sodexo and said : “I am proud to be here today to support our colleagues working globally to champion LGBT inclusion. I firmly believe in the importance of bringing your whole self to work – it is critical for the engagement of our employees and allows our organisation to continue to foster an inclusive culture. The launch of this network in UK and Ireland marks an important milestone in our journey – it means that 65% of our global employee population now works in countries with a Pride chapter, and this percentage will continue to climb.”

Also presenting at the event were Tony Leech, CEO, Justice Services Worldwide, Neil Murray, Regional Chairman, and Chris Bray, CEO of Sodexo’s Sports & Leisure segment and Executive Sponsor for the network.

Chris Bray said : “I’m delighted to be taking on the position of Executive Sponsor for this work-stream. The launch has been an amazing event, which really highlighted why the network is needed for LGBT individuals and how important the support from allies is if we are to make a difference. I’m looking forward to the exciting programme we have in place to advance LGBT inclusion.”

Senior support is so important for ensuring a network is respected and valued at every level in the organisation, and everyone knows how important it is and that they ‘have permission’ to engage and get involved. This level of support at the launch stage is amazing to witness.

The Pride network Co-Chairs Jonny Pileckis and Nia Jordan then discussed their personal experiences of being LGB in the workplace with Margot Slattery, Country President of Sodexo Ireland. Following the inspiring presentations guests enjoyed delicious rainbow cupcakes and lots of networking.

“The launch has been an amazing event, which really highlighted why the network is needed for LGBT individuals and how important the support from allies is if we are to make a difference.”

The network has got off to a very strong start and they aim to lead on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) inclusion among Sodexo’s 34,000 UK and Ireland employees. The network will also champion the role of allies, people who may not identify as being LGBT but are advocates for LGBT inclusion and equality in the workplace and beyond.

The network joins a vibrant community of employee networks at Sodexo, including Generations – one of our 2015 Awesome Networks. Other networks include Origins (Culture, Heritage & Belief) and WomenWork (Gender balance). We love this quote that features on the Sodexo website : “Each one of our employees has something unique to offer. By embracing diversity and creating a workplace where we all feel included and comfortable being ourselves, we can all work better together.”

With so much support, pride and enthusiasm, the network is sure to go from strength to strength. The Inclusive Networks team wish the Sodexo Pride network every success for the future. Well done on an amazing launch!
